The single most important thing that ordinary people can do to sustain British wildlife, is to have a small pond in their garden or yard.
A pond encourages insects such as damsel flies to breed and supports the larval stage of many more creatures. These in turn provide food for invertebrates and birds. Ponds are nowrare breeding places for increasingly threatened frogs, toads and newts, as well as providing water for bees, birds and small mammals. Because the wildlife of ponds includes species at the bottom of the food chain, and many pollinators, the knock-on impact of increasing the number of ponds in a community can have a widespread and rapid impact on local biodiversity.
At the same time your outside space will come alive with the noise and sight of
many more insects, birds and other species. This has a beneficial impact on mental and physical well-being.
A pond can be added to your outdoor space very cheaply. It does not have to be large, deepor expensive to have a big impact.
Laugharne Citizen Science Group has an initiative to increase the number of
ponds in Laugharne. We make is easier and cheaper for residents to make a pond,
purchase liners, purchase or swap oxygenating plants and other materials. We will
provide assistance, support and advice. We can also scientifically test (a free
service) both existing and new ponds to make sure the water is suitable for wildlife. If you would like to add or improve a wildlife pond or help in other ways, please email
hudsonp@cf.ac.uk or ring 07989960844, where you will receive a warm welcome.
